The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has launched an investigation after discovering that one of its official email accounts may have been accessed without authorisation.
The issue emerged after journalists reportedly received emails claiming Argentina's dramatic World Cup victory over Egypt had been decided by corrupt refereeing.
The AFA stressed that the messages were not created or approved by its communications team.
According to reports from Argentina, the emails stated that Argentina "did not truly win" and suggested the result had been influenced by refereeing decisions.
The messages also praised Egypt's performance during the Round of 16 match.
Their circulation quickly generated significant attention across football media and social platforms.
In an official statement, the Argentine Football Association said it had detected the possible distribution of unauthorised emails from one of its institutional accounts.
The organisation advised journalists and supporters to ignore any unusual messages received from its accounts, particularly those containing links, attachments or requests for personal information.
The AFA added that it is investigating the incident while strengthening its cybersecurity measures.
Argentine media reports suggested the emails could have resulted from a cyberattack.
However, the football association has not confirmed who may have been responsible.
