How VAR (Video Assistant Referee) Works

Sportera · 2026-07-04 · 21

VAR was introduced to reduce clear and obvious refereeing errors and is now a staple of major competitions.

Only four situations

VAR only reviews four match-changing situations:

  • Goals (and any preceding infringement).
  • Penalty decisions.
  • Direct red cards.
  • Mistaken identity.

The VAR advises, but the on-field referee makes the final call, often after an on-field review.
