The Offside Rule Explained Simply

Sportera · 2026-07-04 · 21

The offside rule is one of football’s most important — and most argued-about — laws.

When is a player offside?

An attacker is offside if they are nearer to the opponents’ goal than both the ball and the second-to-last defender at the moment a teammate plays the ball to them.

When it doesn’t count

  • In your own half.
  • Direct from a throw-in, corner or goal kick.
  • Level with the second-to-last defender.

What matters is the moment the ball is played, not when it’s received — which is why VAR is often needed.
